Plasma cholinesterase and malignant hyperthermia.

Sir,—Humphrey, Downing and Brock-Utne (1980) are less than accurate in describing the destiny of expiration switched to inspiration in the Johannesburg Circuit. They vaguely refer to experimental evidence gathered "while studying a similar system"—evidence which simply does not tally with known pharmacokinetic principles. With a fresh gas inflow of 70mlkg~' min"' in a patient weighing 65 kg, th...

detected in any patient by this method. Fourteen patients had raised serum creatine kinase activity (up to 5000 IU/1, normal range < 170 lU/i) and raised serum aspartate transaminase activity (up to 150 IU/1, normal < 35 IU/1). In all cases enzyme activity fell after admission to hospital. Peak serum creatine kinase activity was not significantly related to weight, sex, level of consciousness, ...

Procaine in malignant hyperpyrexia.

The caffeine contracture of normal human muscle, which has been used as a model for malignant hyperpyrexia, is greatly potentiated by halothane. Prior administration of procaine markedly reduces the halothane-potentiated caffeine contracture, and procaine given at the height of the contracture induces relaxation. Lignocaine, on the other hand, produces a variable response and sometimes increase...

Malignant hyperpyrexia: A dread complication

We are, indeed, fortunate in the Anesthesia Department at North Carolina Baptist Hospital to have an excellent supply of equipment. Yet, we are guilty, at times, of failing to take full advantage of it. A prime example is the temperature probe, a valuable aid in the diagnosis of malignant hyperpyrexia. In fact, it is so important that failure to monitor body temperature during anesthesia may ha...

Collaborative study of the frequency of the fluoride-resistant cholinesterase variant in patients with malignant hyperpyrexia.

Cholinesterase phenotyping studies have been carried out in two laboratories on blood specimens from 28 patients shown to be susceptible to malignant hyperpyrexia. In contrast to previously published reports, no evidence could be found for an increase in the frequency of the E1u E1f genotype above that known to occur in the general population.
